Today computers are a part of everything we do. Technology has not only become wireless and mobile, but also pervasive and perpetual. You may say technology has dissolved the meaning of time and place. Something which is important to human relations, especially since human relations are presently evolving in and around technology – and not the other way around.
This Master’s thesis explores the phenomenon ‘smart mob’. A smart mob is a mobile ad hoc social network in which individuals act as entities, even though they don’t necessarily know each other at all. Individuals in smart mobs activate their network, when they have to mobilise a rally of people quickly and efficiently for a particular cause. Information and communication technology, i.e. mobile phones, SMS messages, e-mail and Internet, play a significant role in communicating and coordinating activities.
A smart mob is an organisation with no established formal hierarchy or central leadership. When a smart mob acts, it does so by connecting amorphous, autonomous and dynamic groups together in a loosely woven net of relations. This type of organisation demands a high level of information. With modern ICT, it becomes an information gathering and information producing entity that is capable of dissolving, hiding and suddenly reoccurring physically – almost like a swarm of birds or bees.
